Sukau Rainforest Lodge

At Sukau rainforest lodge there is a lot of information written by its conservation fellows, including Sr john Payne. He said one of the reasons why the Lower Kinabatangan was not inhabited a lot and rice productions didn’t happen was because “there was fear from piracy from South Philippines and the head hunters from Kalimantan. Also the unstable ecosystem of floodplains where there was flooding through the year, and erratic rainfall and flooding can change the river course quickly. Oxbow lakes can be formed overnight”.

David Attenborough has been to Borneo since 1972. He wrote:
“Borneo, the third largest island is one of the richest treasures and houses an immense variety of wild animals and plants. It is under threat of degradation due to economic and social pressures. The forests are not just homes of wildlife, they protect the land and give birth to the island’s rivers. They maintain the ecosystem of Mother Nature both the habitat of animal and humanity. Join me in helping to save the heart of Borneo - a global Heritage”.

Sukau Rainforest Lodge was the first to bring ecotourism into Kinabatangan area. They are doing a lot. They help local villages, provide environmental awareness programmes to primary schools, train the local people to become nature guides and work at the lodge, have solar electricity, their own water, and most of the food is from the local area. There’s lots of fish, and I know now why there were cartons and cartons of eggs on our boat to the lodge - eggs for breakfast every day! There are only 18 rooms - so no more than about 36 people can be there.

Here are some shots of the lodge .. and some paintings I did after our morning boat ride.
