Mum & I have sore butts! 30km of riding out of Luang Prabang ..
Laos is the only land-locked country in South East Asia, it's also one of the poorest. The country is filled with rugged mountains and it's hard to move around the country. Most people use the rivers. The roads are in bad condition. I was told last night that it takes 7 hours to go by road to the Capital of Laos, Vientiane. Laos has plenty of natural resources, especially minerals like gold, copper and tin but it's very hard to export resources there is no direct access to a sea port.
They are beginning to improve the road system, which Mum and I learned about today. We were meant to ride peacefully through the countryside, through villages and local life. BUT, look at the photos below to see where we rode for 2 hours.
Oh, and you know how I've said the Luang Prabang is surrounded by mountains, well Mum didn't think about how we were going to get to the rural area! Hills!!

Uphill .. dirt, pot-holed road which is being built and widened. |
Trucks! the dry sand flew through our noses every time they passed. |
Mum stopped to take this photo of goats, but I think she just wanted a rest. |
See? they are improving the roads - building them. Next time we come it will be an easy bitumen road, BUT it wasn't today! |
Water - was needed. |
and I also needed a rest! |
we did see SOME villages when we got close to the river. |
Looks like hard work! Besides the goats , what other animals can you expect to see in Laos?
ReplyDeleteSo far, I've seen sun and moon bears, pigs, buffalo, the usual dogs and cats and chickens and ducks. There's a soala which is a sort of goat & sheep. Mum says you want a goat but Mark won't let you. Do you want me to pick up a soala ?
