Bamboo train

Bamboo Train

The norry, or bamboo train, was built in the 1970s after the Khmer Rouge when the roads were destroyed. There were few ways of transportation and the locals built this basic, rudimentary transport system to move produce, products and people.

The “train” carriage is basically a bamboo mat which is placed on two poles with wheels that sit on top of the “tracks”. If you look at the photos you'll see what I mean.
When it was first built, people used sticks to push the “carriage” on the tracks, like an Asian gondola, but then they added small gas engines.

It goes 40km /hr!!
We wizzed through the countryside. The only problem was that there is only ONE track. So we were steaming ahead when we saw another norry jettisoning towards us! The driver, of course, knew what to do. Stop out train, get off, lift it up off the track, lay it down on the soil, wait for the other norry to pass, and then put it and us back again!
Here are photos of the norry and the landscape we passed.
