Weaving village

Today Sokha drove Mum, Sopheak and I around a silk weaving village, because I had never seen silk woven before. Sokha didn’t take us to a touristy area, we just drove around the Takeo province where there are many villagers making small amounts of money weaving silk.

Sokha spied a weaving loom under a wooden stilt house, so he parked and we went to observe more closely. Sokha explained that when you weave the silk it takes lots of concentration to make sure the thread is in place in order to keep the pattern. One of the women showed us how to weave. Sokha translated in English because she was speaking Khmer. I learnt that it takes a whole day with no break (accept lunch) to weave 1.5 meters of silk!
